CHP43 is the name for a collection of 9 unique objects that are both candle (C) holders (H) and pedestals (P). 43 refers to the length of the base and the diameter of the disc that gives the objects their function as pedestals.

As in his earlier work, Oskar De Roover starts from reclaimed natural stone and seeks a way to restore the dignity of discarded pieces of stone by creating a new context in which their individuality is emphasized. The stones – old window sills or other remnants of buildings – are cleaned, sanded and honed on both sides, with all edges finished. They are placed upright and gently held in place by a stainless steel structure: a solid bar at the bottom that provides lateral balance, two folded U-profiles into which the stones slide, and a small block at the top into which a small disc with a candle or a large disc can be screwed without additional tools.

Both the stone and steel structures in these objects have a high degree of independence, can almost stand upright on their own, but still need each other to maintain balance. One provides stability in one direction, the other in the other direction. They do this not by clinging to each other, but by gently leaning against each other and trusting each other. This caring, delicate balance gives the objects a calming presence. The ritual transformation from candle holder to pedestal or vice versa provides energy and movement on the one hand, and slowness and a certain sacredness on the other.
